Science has dated the Star Wars saga to approximately 342,000 years ago. Star Wars takes place in the past. (It is of course important to recognize that Star Wars is only an adaptation of historical material, and the historical accuracy is not always historically accurate. It is like how in the film Gladiator, it's good, but pretty false. For example, we know that there was an Emperor Palpatine, but the evidence suggesting that he was in reality a Dark Lord of the Sith is pretty scant. As another example, we know that there was a droid called C-3P0, but the notion that this droid was designed by Anakin Skywalker is a purely fictional delusion.) Now, utilizing science, scientists have been able to determine with some certainty that the galaxy in which Star Wars takes place is none other than NGC 1300. NGC 1300 is a barred spiral galaxy about 61 million light-years away in the constellation Eridanus. The galaxy is about 110,000 light-years across; just slightly larger than our own galaxy, the Milky Way. It may be part of the Eridanus Cluster. This is true: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NGC_1300In the era depicted in Star Wars, interstellar travel throughout their galaxy was clearly quite common, but travels to other galaxies were relatively rare. Remember, though, that this was 342,000 years ago. The information available seems to suggest that around 250,000 years ago, humans in NGC 1300 developed an even more advanced form of the hyperspace engine, allowing them access to other neighboring galaxies. It is said that by 200,000 years ago, the New Galactic Republic spanned twelve entire galaxies. It was in this era that some humans grew disdainful of the Republic. It was decided that 30,000 individuals would board a colonization vessel and travel 61 million light years to the Milky Way galaxy. Even with Super Hyperspace Engines, nobody had ever traveled so far. So it was that humans landed here on Earth, and things transpired in a BSG finale kind of manner. Some of their recorded history obviously survived into the modern era, and was uncovered by George Lucas, who decided to adapt these historical records into a motion picture, taking certain liberties with history to make the films, in his opinion, more compelling. He neglected certain characteristics, such as Chewbacca's alcoholism and opiate addiction, and for reasons unknown decided to invent the fictional race of "Gungans". It is true that there used to exist an aquatic race of beings on Naboo, but they were genocided thousands of years before the events of The Phantom Menace took place. (In fact, Naboo was under permanent blockade due to their genocidal ways, so George Lucas took great liberties to make them seem like the wronged faction in TPM. This also sheds light on Amidala's inexplicable willingness to disregard Anakin's slaughter of Tusken children...genocide and human supremacy are ingrained in Nabooist culture.) This is all beside the point however. Earth is 61 million light years away from the Star Wars galaxy. When the events of the films took place, no human had yet traveled from NGC 1300 to the Milky Way, as the technology for such a venture would not yet exist for another 100,000 years.
